Affordable Computing Tablets in Indian Markets

Affordable computing & ultra-portability usually do not go hand-in-hand. However, a couple of Indian origin tablets are vying to break the notion.

Contradictory to the market trends, WishTel has launched an affordable 7” Tablet running Google’s latest Operating System (OS) Ice Cream Sandwich. The Capacitive multi-touch screen sports a decent 1.5 GHz single core processor. Titled as ‘Ira Thing 2’ the tablet has minimum 512MB RAM & 3000 mAh Battery. One of the advantages of ‘Ira Thing 2’ is that it supports 14 Indian languages. However, the tablet seems more oriented towards the entertainment segment with several TV and e-news apps pre-loaded onto it. Priced competitively at just Rs. 6500 (US$ 120) it will compete against KloudPad, ClassPad & such.

The second tablet to make an entry into the affordable segment is ‘XPad’. But this tablet is supposed to cater to the international market. Having officially being launched in Dubai, this one sports the same sized screen as above, but may have a slightly older generation processor. Owing to an international approach, the manufacturer Simmtronics has managed to get pre-orders for about half a million units & its factory in India is busy cranking out 300,000 units per month.

Tablets are revolutionizing mobile-computing, with adequate connectivity options & a sturdy build, these miniature computers can easily be deployed in locations where costly & bulky equipment simply cannot go. The fields of education & medicine can be benefited if such devices are employed by schools & rudimentary health care providers. However, none of that has actually happened so far. Though Aakash showed immense promise, its first iteration did not impress. The second version is supposed to have all the bells & whistles but we will have to wait till it actually arrives.
